Well, I Got It
I was complaining the other day about how my Phillies can never have an easy win, it has to be a challenge.
Well, that easy win was wrapped up and sent my way yesterday.
The offense was one thing to behold, but Cliff Lee was absolutely incredible. I love watching that man pitch, especially when his control is like that.
Today, Joe Blanton will take the mound, and i’ve been calling for him to start for a while, so hopefully he doesn’t let me down.
He’ll be taking on former Phillie Randy Wolf, I will not be angry if some Phillies fans bring back the Wolf Pack, that is totally fine with me.
On the other side of things, Jered Weaver takes on Andy Pettitte. I would like to see a good game from Weaver, and he needs it if the Angels want to stay alive.
The 2009 Playoffs, Day 1
Three games on today to start the postseason, The Rockies take on the Phillies, the Twins face the Yankees, and the Cardinals meet the Dodgers.
Colorado Rockies at Philadelphia Phillies – Game 1
2:37 ET: Ubaldo Jimenez v. Cliff Lee
Ubaldo Jimenez’ Record: 15-12, 3.47 ERA
Past Postseason Record: 0-1, 2.25 ERA (3 starts, 0 relief)
Cliff Lee’s Record: 14-13, 3.22 ERA
Past Postseason Record: N/A
Minnesota Twins at New York Yankees – Game 1
6:07 ET: Brian Duensing v. CC Sabathia
Brian Duensing’s Record: 5-2, 3.64 ERA
Past Postseason Record: N/A
CC Sabathia’s Record: 19-8, 3.37 ERA
Past Postseason Record: 2-3, 7.92 ERA (5 starts, 0 relief)
St. Louis Cardinals at Los Angeles Dodgers – Game 1
9:37 ET: Chris Carpenter v. Randy Wolf
Chris Carpenter’s Record: 17-4, 2.24 ERA
Past Postseason Record: 5-1, 2.53 ERA (8 starts, 0 relief)
Randy Wolf’s Record: 11-7, 3.23 ERA
Past Postseason Record: N/A
Of the six pitchers today, three have them have pitched in the playoffs before. Of those three, two of them have been pretty successful.
Judging by regular season record and past playoff experience, Chris Carpenter is the best pitcher on the mound today.
CC Sabathia really needs to turn things around this year. The Yankees have 0 chance to win if he pitched poorly.
The Twins are starting a rookie in Brian Duensing, clearly they’ve had a lot of work to do this past week, but I find it surprising, then again, who else is there?
Cliff Lee hasn’t been Cliff Lee over his last seven games, I hope his first playoff experience is a good one.
Ubaldo Jimenez will be in a very familiar place today, back in Philadelphia where he made his postseason debut, where, much to my dismay, his Rockies destroyed my Phillies.
Randy Wolf has been in the league a long time, but just now will he be pitching in the playoffs for the fisrt time, I wish him the best and I hope the Wolf Pack is with him.
I’m looking forward to these games today, playoff baseball is back.
Duel of the Day – Saturday, September 5, 2009
The Phillies may have one of the best offenses in the majors, but when one goes cold, they all seem to go cold.

San Diego Padres (Mat Latos, 4-4, 4.53) at Los Angeles Dodgers (Randy Wolf, 9-6, 3.25)
The Rundown:
A pair of 12-game winners face off in Milwaukee as Gallardo and Cain do battle. Yovani has hit 7 innings just 3 times in his last 10 starts, for whatever reasonm if he wants to make a name for himself he has to go longer in these games. He is a phenominal pitcher if you’ve never been able to see him, but he’s gone too early, which is the problem with strikeout pitchers like him. Gallardo is 2-0 in 2 games against the Giants with a 1.91 ERA. Matt Cain hasn’t been quite as noteworthy lately, but he is a great pitcher who is having an incredible season. Clearly though, when you get to thjs time of year pitchers wear down, there is no way around it. If they didn’t wear down then maybe Matt Cain is the Cy Young winner hands down (he still as a chance to win it though). Against the Brewers, Cain is 1-1 in 2 starts with a 3.86 ERA.
The Notables: Scott Baker, who is 6-0 in his last 10 starts. Jair Jurrjens has pitched great in his last 4 starts but has only 1 win to show for it. Josh Johnson has had a rare taste at the other end of the pitching spectrum lately, the losing part, he has lost 2 of his last 3. Joe Blanton hasn’t allowed more than 3 runs in a game since June 18. Zack Greinke has been on the money again for his last 2 games, hopefully he can keep it up into October (that is when the season ends you know). Randy Wolf is 4-0 in his last 5 starts and has been unexpectedly great all year.
Duel of the Day – Monday, August 31, 2009
Joe Blanton pitched a great game, left with the lead, Madson came in, and I thought they were going to lose the lead, a great play gets 2 outs and then they get out of the innings. Brad Lidge was perfect for his second outing in a row, I just hope this is a good sign, if there was ever a time for him to get hot, it’s right now.
Pitchers who went 7 innings: Jeff Niemann (ND, 5 hits, 2 runs, 0 walks, 3 K’s), Clayton Kershaw (ND, 4 hits, 2 runs, 2 walks, 11 K’s), Bronson Arroyo (ND, 7.1 innings, 6 hits, 2 runs, 2 walks, 3 K’s), Brian Matusz (W, 4 hits, 1 run, 1 walk, 8 K’s), Scott Baker (ND, 6 hits, 3 runs, 1 walk, 6 K’s), Nelson Figueroa (W, 6 hits, 1 run, 2 walks, 10 K’s), Dan Haren (W, 6 hits, 3 runs, 2 walks, 7 K’s), Jair Jurrjens (L, 7 hits, 3 runs – 2 earned, 2 walks, 2 K’s), Joe Blanton (W, 3 hits, 1 run, 4 walks, 7 K’s)
Pitchers who went 8 innings: Justin Verlander (W, 6 hits, 3 runs, 3 walks, 4 K’s), John Lackey (W, 5 hits, 1 run – 0 earned, 2 walks, 6 K’s), Ryan Rowland-Smith (L, 5 hits, 3 runs, 1 walk, 7 K”s)
Pitchers who went 9 innings: Zack Greinke (W, 1 hit, 0 runs, 1 walk, 5 K’s)
The Duel of Yesterday: Zack Greinke v. Ryan Rowland-Smith
The matchups:
Tampa Bay Rays (James Shields, 8-10, 3.81) at Detroit Tigers (Jarrod Washburn, 9-7, 3.23 – 1-1, 5.74)
Pittsburgh Pirates (Daniel McCutchen – First Start) at Cincinnati Reds (Kip Wells, 0-3, 5.85 – 0-1, 4.61)
New York Yankees (Andy Pettitte, 11-6, 4.18) at Baltimore Orioles (Jeremy Guthrie, 9-12, 5.26)
Atlanta Braves (Kenshin Kawakami, 6-10, 4.08) at Florida Marlins (Josh Johnson, 13-3, 3.04)

Los Angeles Angels (Joe Saunders, 10-7, 5.27) at Seattle Mariners (Luke French, 4-3, 3.92)
Arizona Diamondbacks (Doug Davis, 7-11, 3.75) at Los Angeles Dodgers (Randy Wolf, 9-6, 3.25)
The rundown:
A couple of crafty, left-handed veterans face off in Chavez Ravine tonight. Doug Davis really is having a very good season, although his record doesn’t show it, and Randy Wolf has been incredible, he hasn’t finished a season with an ERA this low since 2002 with the Phillies. Doug Davis left his last start with the lead, Chad Qualls was brought in to get out of the 8th inning jam, instead he allowed a 3 run homer, and Davis sat there with another no decision, he really pitched a great game too. Against the Dodgers this season, he is 0-1 in 2 starts with a 5.35 ERA. Randy Wolf has won 4 games in a row and pitched a great one against Colorado last time out, going 7.1 innings and allowing just a run. Against the D’backs, he is 2-0 in 3 games with a 4.01 ERA.
The notables: Not really too much, just Josh Johnson and one of my favorites Rich Harden.
Duel of the Day – Wednesday, August 26, 2009
It’s time for Brad Lidge to be the bigger man, it’s time for him to go up to Charlie Manuel and tell him “Take me out of the closer’s role, it’s just not working.” I thought it was amusing how he said this: “The fourth day in a row for me historically has been pretty bad.” Brad, I don’t care what day it is, you have been bad since the season began, I wish I could trust him, but I just can’t anymore.
Pitchers who went 7 innings: Mat Latos (ND, 2 hits, 0 runs, 0 walks, 4 K’s), Jair Jurrjens (ND, 7.2 innings, 5 hits, 1 run, 4 walks, 7 K’s), Bronson Arroyo (ND, 6 hits, 1 run, 1 walk, 4 K’s), Wandy Rodriguez (L, 3 hits, 1 run, 1 walk, 6 K’s), Jason Hammel (ND, 8 hits, 2 runs, 2 walks, 4 K’s), Brett Anderson (ND, 6 hits, 1 run, 1 walk, 8 K’s), Dan Haren (ND, 6 hits, 2 runs, 1 walk, 6 K’s), Matt Cain (ND, 4 hits, 2 runs – 1 earned, 4 walks, 4 K’s)
Pitchers who went 8 innings: Zack Greinke (W, 5 hits, 2 runs, 1 walk, 15 K’s), Adam Wainwright (W, 3 hits, 0 runs, 0 walks, 5 K’s)
The Duel of Yesterday: Wandy Rodriguez v. Adam Wainwright (Called it)
The matchups:
Cleveland Indians (David Huff, 7-7, 6.80) at Kansas City Royals (Luke Hochevar, 6-6, 5.60)
Detroit Tigers (Edwin Jackson, 10-5, 2.86) at Los Angeles Angels (Joe Saunders, 9-7, 5.33)

Chicago White Sox (Gavin Floyd, 10-8, 3.98) at Boston Red Sox (Tim Wakefield, 11-3, 4.31)
Cincinnati Reds (Kip Wells, 0-3, 5.91 – 0-1, 4.15) at Milwaukee Brewers (Braden Looper, 11-6, 4.95)
Washington Nationals (Livan Hernandez, 7-8, 5.47) at Chicago Cubs (Rich Harden, 8-7, 4.04)

Arizona Diamondbacks (Doug Davis, 7-11, 3.77) at San Francisco Giants (Jonathan Sanchez, 6-10, 4.30)
The notables: Josh Johnson, who looks to rebound after a rare bad outing. Tim Wakefield, who looks to pick up where he left off, as he returns tonight. Rich Harden, who has showed me that the old Rich isn’t dead yet. Joel Pineiro, who is still having a very nice season. Randy Wolf, who has has plenty of goos games in a row.
Duel of the Day – Friday, August 21, 2009
It was fun watching the Phillies offense pound the D’backs into the ground, and it was even better to see Joe Blanton finally get a well deserved win.
Pitchers who went 7 innings: Aaron Harang (ND, 6 hits, 1 run, 2 walks, 4 K’s), Jason Hammel (W, 3 hits, 1 run, 2 walks, 3 K’s), Kenshin Kawakami (W, 7 hits, 1 run, 2 walks, 5 K’s), Johan Santana (L, 9 hits, 3 runs, 0 walks, 2 K’s), Joel Pineiro (W, 7.2 innings, 4 hits, 1 run, 2 walks, 7 K’s)
Pitchers who went 8 innings: Matt Cain (ND, 8 hits, 1 run, 1 walk, 3 K’s), Joe Blanton (W, 10 hits, 3 runs, 0 walks, 4 K’s), Jon Lester (W, 3 hits, 1 run, 2 walks, 5 K’s), Wandy Rodriguez (W, 4 hits, 1 run – 0 earned, 2 walks, 7 K’s)
The Duel of Yesterday: Matt Cain v. Aaron Harang (1 point for me!)
The matchups:
Seattle Mariners (Luke French, 2-3, 3.74) at Cleveland Indians (David Huff, 7-6, 6.55)
Cincinnati Reds (Micah Owings, 6-11, 5.35) at Pittsburgh Pirates (Charlie Morton, 2-6, 5.51)
Milwaukee Brewers (Braden Looper, 10-6, 5.03) at Washington Nationals (J.D. Martin, 2-2, 4.61)
Los Angeles Angels (Sean O’Sullivan, 3-1, 5.91) at Toronto Blue Jays (Marc Rzepczynski, 1-3, 3.98)
New York Yankees (Andy Pettitte, 9-6, 4.09) at Boston Red Sox (Brad Penny, 7-7, 5.22)
Philadelphia Phillies (Cole Hamels, 7-7, 4.69) at New York Mets (Mike Pelfrey, 8-8, 4.75)
Florida Marlins (Anibal Sanchez, 1-4, 5.55) at Atlanta Braves (Javier Vazquez, 10-8, 2.99)
Texas.Rangers (Dustin Nippert, 4-1, 3.52) at Tampa Bay Rays (Scott Kazmir, 7-7, 6.36)
Arizona Diamondbacks (Yusmeiro Petit, 2-7, 6.47) at Houston Astros (Roy Oswalt, 6-4, 4.01)
Minnesota Twins (Nick Blackburn, 8-8, 4.29) at Kansas City Royals (Luke Hochevar, 6-6, 5.73)
Baltimore Orioles (Jeremy Guthrie, 7-12, 5.66) at Chicago White Sox (Gavin Floyd, 10-7, 3.94)
San Francisco Giants (Jonathan Sanchez, 5-10, 4.49) at Colorado Rockies (Aaron Cook, 10-5, 4.31)
St. Louis Cardinals (Kyle Lohse, 5-7, 4.58) at San Diego Padres (Clayton Richard, 6-3, 4.66)
Detroit Tigers (Edwin Jackson, 9-5, 2.85) at Oakland Athletics (Gio Gonzalez, 4-3, 5.88)
Chacago Cubs (Randy Wells, 9-5, 3.01) at Los Angeles Dodgers (Randy Wolf, 7-6, 3.43)
The rundown:
I’m going out on a limb that this matchup could be a good one, there really aren’t any others out there. Randy Wells will be looked at very closely as a R.O.Y. candidate because he has been one of the few bright spots for the Cubs. This good sinker-baller is coming off a pretty good start against Pittsburgh, although i’m a little worried this Dodger offense might be too much for him. He did pitch very good against the Dodgers in May (2 runs in 7 innings) but he got the loss. Randy Wolf had himself a game in his last start, 7.2 innings, struck out 10, and he had 3 hits with 3 RBI’s. Wolf was actually the guy who beat Wells on that day in May, he gave up only 1 run in 7.
The notables: Andy Pettitte, who has been on a little roll of late, he struck out 10 his last time out. Javier Vazquez, who has been pitching good, even though he got roughed up against the Phils’ in his most recent outing. Gavin Floyd who pitched a great game against the A’s, along with 3 other great outing, with one bad one sandwhiched in-between.
Duel of the Day – Sunday, August 16, 2009
The Phillies are having open tryout’s for potential closers, any fan can come to the ballpark on the scheduled day and show them what he’s got. In all seriousness, I really think we should give Chan Ho Park a try, or Tyler Walker even, find a game where you have a 3 run lead and if Park hasn’t been used or Walker hasn’t been moved then try it out, what have they got to lose anymore, except more games via blown save. Park has a 2.57 ERA as a reliever, striking out 47 in 42 innings with a 1.12 WHIP. Tyler Walker’s ERA is 2.41, with a 1.07 WHIP, but I would consider him only if Park fails.
Pitchers who went 7 innings: Zach Duke (L, 7.1 innings, 9 hits, 3 runs, 1 walk, 3 K’s), Gavin Floyd (W, 8 hits, 1 run, 2 walks, 8 K’s), Matt Cain (ND, 7.1 innings, 6 hits, 3 runs, 0 walks, 2 K’s), John Lackey (W, 7 hits, 1 run, 1 walk, 6 K’s), Mike Burns (W, 4 hits, 2 runs, 3 walks, 7 K’s)
The Duel of Yesterday: Matt Cain v. Johan Santana
The matchups:
Kansas City Royals (Kyle Davies, 4-8, 6.11) at Detroit Tigers (Armando Galarraga, 6-10, 5.23)
San Francisco Giants (Jonathan Sanchez, 5-10, 4.61) at New York Mets (Mike Pelfrey, 8-8, 4.88)
Washington Nationals (John Lannan, 8-9, 3.58) at Cincinnati Reds (Justin Lehr, 2-0, 1.80)
Los Angeles Angels (Sean O’Sullivan, 3-1, 5.12) at Baltimore Orioles (Jeremy Guthrie, 7-12, 5.43)
Colorado Rockies (Aaron Cook, 10-4, 3.93) at Florida Marlins (Chris Volstad, 8-9, 4.71)
Colorado Rockies (Jorge De La Rosa, 10-8, 4.78) at Florida Marlins (Rick VandenHurk, 2-1, 4.15)
Toronto Blue Jays (Marc Rzepczynski, 1-4, 4.38) at Tampa Bay Rays (Matt Garza, 7-8, 3.80)
Boston Red Sox (Junichi Tazawa, 1-1, 4.05) at Texas Rangers (Dustin Nippert, 3-1, 3.62)
Houston Astros (Roy Oswalt, 6-4, 3.87) at Milwaukee Brewers (Braden Looper, 10-6, 4.99)
Cleveland Indians (Aaron Laffey, 6-3, 3.25) at Minnesota Twins (Nick Blackburn, 8-7, 3.99)
San Diego Padres (Clayton Richard, 6-3, 4.57 – 2-0, 4.15) at St. Louis Cardinals (Kyle Lohse, 5-7, 4.34)
Pittsburgh Pirates (Ross Ohlendorf, 10-8, 4.30) at Chicago Cubs (Rich Harden, 7-7, 4.30)
Chicago White Sox (John Danks, 10-8, 4.04) at Oakland Athletics (Trevor Cahill, 6-12, 5.06)
New York Yankees (Joba Chamberlain, 8-2, 3.85) at Seattle Mariners (Doug Fister, 0-0, 0.00)
Los Angeles Dodgers (Randy Wolf, 6-6, 3.43) at Arizona Diamondbacks (Yusmeiro Petit, 2-6, 5.87)
Philadelphja Phillies (J.A. Happ, 8-2, 2.75) at Atlanta Braves (Javier Vazquez, 10-7, 2.90)
The rundown:
The only duel potential today is this one between Happ and Vazquez. Vazquez has again shown that he is one of the premier strikout pitchers in the league and he’ll be at 200 by season’s end for the 5th time. Also, that ERA of his is tremendous and his WHIP is 1.04, which is outstandind. I believe it was Hawk Harrelson who dubbed him “The Silent Assassin,” not sure how he gave him this name, but I would assume it’s because he puts together great seasons year after year and he’s always forgotten. J.A. Happ is putting together a sensational year and I love watching him pitch. He may walk guys and give up homers, but he is doing great and he’s really been the story of the year, especially lately. If the Phillies decide to lead this game, I suggest it’s by more than 3 runs, the last thing we need is more Brad Lidge.
The notables:
Notable pitchers include: Jorge De La Rosa who struck out 11 last time, Matt Garza who had 3 good starts until a poor outing last time, Aaron Laffey who has given up 4 runs in his last 25.2 innings, Rich Harden has been racking up the K’s and is getting better and better, Randy Wolf pitched 8 strong innings last time out in what has been a very good season for him.
Duel of the Day – Thursday, August 6, 2009
So it’s now the next morning and i’m still all fired up about one James Anthony Happ. I read the most recent article, and it turns out, even after that, they are still willing to dispatch of Happ for Pedro Martinez. I am so disgusted right now, I just want them to cut ties with Pedro, why change what works?
Pitchers who went 7 innings: Doug Davis (W, 4 hits, 2 runs, 2 walks, 5 K’s), Jeremy Guthrie (7.1 innings, L, 6 hits, 3 runs, 2 walks, 3 K’s)
Pitchers who went 8 innings: Edwin Jackson (W, 3 hits, 2 runs, 2 walks, 8 K’s), Aaron Laffey (W, 6 hits, 1 run – 0 earned, 1 walk, 5 K’s), Gavin Floyd (W, 6 hits, 2 runs – 1 earned, 1 walk, 6 K’s)
Pitchers who went 9 innings: J.A. Happ (W, 8-2, 4 hits, 0 runs, 2 walks, 10 K’s, 2.74 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, .222 AVG), Justin Lehr (W, 4 hits, 0 runs, 1 walk, 4 K’s)
The Duel of Yesterday: J.A. Happ (in all actuality it was Jeremy Guthrie v. Edwin Jackson)
The matchups:
Minnesota Twins (Nick Blackburn, 8-5, 3.83) at Cleveland Indians (Fausto Carmona, 2-6, 7.13)
Florida Marlins (Chris Volstad, 8-9, 4.35) at Washington Nationals (Craig Stammen, 3-6, 4.96)
Baltimore Orioles (David Hernandez, 3-3, 3.28) at Detroit Tigers (Rick Porcello, 9-7, 4.36)
Colorado Rockies (Aaron Cook, 10-3, 3.88) at Philadelphia Phillies (Cliff Lee, 8-9, 3.02)
Los Angeles Angels (Ervin Santana, 3-6, 7.31) at Chicago White Sox (John Danks, 9-7, 4.00)
Texas Rangers (Tommy Hunter, 3-2, 2.63) at Oakland Athletics (Trevor Cahill, 6-10, 5.01)
Arizona Diamondbacks (Max Scherzer, 6-6, 3.80) at Pittsburgh Pirates (Kevin Hart, 3-1, 2.60)
Boston Red Sox (John Smoltz, 2-4, 7.12) at New York Yankees (Joba Chamberlain, 7-2, 3.58)
Seattle Mariners (Jason Vargas, 3-5, 4.71) at Kansas City Royals (Bruce Chen, 0-6, 5.73)
New York Mets (Livan Hernandez, 7-5, 4.77) at San Diego Padres (Clayton Richard, 4-3, 4.47)
Atlanta Braves (Derek Lowe, 11-7, 4.21) at Los Angeles Dodgers (Randy Wolf, 5-6, 3.47)
The rundown:
Ah, the sweet smell of an ace, since Cole Hamels has not been ace-like this season, it feels good to have one. Cliff Lee will take on the Rockies today and look to duplicate his phenominal first start (which I missed because I was on vacation). I am so pumped for this game, especially after last night, Happ had the everyone standing by the time the 9th inning started. Aaron Cook cannot be overlooked though, this guy knows what he’s doing, he’s been a solid starter for a while now, and he has a good record and ERA this year. Cliff Lee looks to get to .500 on the season, which he deserves to be, and if he pitches good enough, he can drop that ERA below 3.00.
The notables:
Nick Blackburn will face Fausto Carmona, which has potential duel possibility, I like what I see out of Chris Volstad, he’s going to face the Nationals, Rick Porcello has sparked some interest this year, he’ll take on the Orioles, Tommy Hunter is still having a pretty good season, he’ll face the A’s, Joba Chamberlain has improved his season and he’ll have the Red Sox tonight, Derek Lowe will face Randy Wolf in another potential pitchers duel.
