The 2010 American League West Preview

As I sit and wait for baseball to begin, I decided to take the fact that I have no life and go through every MLB team and project their roster, as of the beginning of Spring Training.  I like to show as often as possible that I’m not just a Phillies fan; I want to know as much about baseball as possible.  I want to know to Orioles roster and I want to know the Giants roster, along with every team in the middle.  I’m not going to be doing any sort of season projections now, it’s far too early to tell something like that.  I just want a feel for what a team is going to look like, I’ll do my best to breakdown the strengths and weaknesses.  If you see something that doesn’t look right, it is most likely because that is who I personally believe should be in that spot.

The Los Angeles Angels

Projected Rotation:
Jered Weaver – RHP
Joe Saunders – LHP
Joel Pineiro – RHP
Scott Kazmir – LHP
Ervin Santana – RHP

Not seeing John Lackey at the top of the list really does take something away from the rotation.  After the year he just had, the Pineiro signing looks to be a smart one, plus, it solidifies the 3 spot pretty well.  Ervin Santana will have a lot to do with the success of this club, from 16 wins in ’08 to 8 in ’09, 3.50 ERA to 5.00 ERA, they need him now more than ever.

Projected Bullpen:
Brian Fuentes – Closer – LHP
Fernando Rodney – RHP
Scot Shields – RHP
Kevin Jepsen – RHP
Jason Bulger – RHP
Matt Palmer – RHP
Sean O’Sullivan – RHP

A little unsure about this bullpen.  Fuentes is an average closer at best and Rodney was good with save conversions, but the ERA was awfully high.  What will help, is a healthy Scot Shields; he’s a guy that I have always liked and I hope he returns to form.  Jepsen was a nice find as well last year, he’ll need to be even better this time around.

Projected Starters:
C – Mike Napoli – R
1B – Kendry Morales – S
2B – Howie Kendrick – R
3B – Brandon Wood – R
SS – Erick Aybar – S
LF – Juan Rivera – R
CF – Torii Hunter – R
RF – Bobby Abreu – L
DH – Hideki Matsui – L

I hope all of Brandon Wood’s waiting comes to fruition this season as 3rd base now belongs to him.  The rest of the lineup remained relatively unchanged, except for the addition of a new DH in Hideki Matsui

Projected Bench:
C Jeff Mathis – R
INF Maicer Izturis – S
OF Reggie Willits – S
3B Freddy Sandoval – S
Other Options:
OF Terry Evans – R

This looks to be a pretty strong bench if you ask me.  Maicer Izturis really could be a starter on many teams and Reggie Willits reminds me a lot of Brandon Wood.  Both of them are good enough in the Minors, but lack in the Majors.

The Oakland Athletics

Projected Rotation:
Ben Sheets – RHP
Dallas Braden – LHP
Justin Duchscherer – RHP
Brett Anderson – LHP
Trevor Cahill – RHP
Other Options:
Vin Mazzaro – RHP
Gio Gonzalez – LHP
Josh Outman – LHP

Any potential success this rotation will have relies on health.  If those top three guys stay healthy, especially Sheets and Duchscherer, watch out for these guys.  Ben Sheets is one of the most dominant starting pitchers in baseball when he’s on, and hitters make that pretty clear.  Justin Duchscherer is really a very nice foil pair (my 11th grade English teacher would be proud) to Sheets, as both take very different roads to getting hitters out, but they do it.

Projected Bullpen:
Andrew Bailey – Closer – RHP
Brad Ziegler – RHP
Michael Wuertz – RHP
Joey Devine – RHP
Craig Breslow – LHP
Jerry Blevins – LHP
Jon Meloan – RHP

The A’s bullpen looks alright on paper to tell you the truth.  You have a good young closer, your daily dose of two lefties and Michael Wuertz (who was crazy good last year, I had no idea).  A healthy Joey Devine will also do this pen a world of good.

Projected Starters:
C – Kurt Suzuki – R
1B – Daric Barton – L
2B – Mark Ellis – R
3B – Kevin Kouzmanoff – R
SS – Cliff Pennington – S
LF – Rajai Davis – R
CF – Coco Crisp – S
RF – Ryan Sweeney – L
DH – Jack Cust – L

I wonder if this team will do a good job at working walks?  Something tells me it will as the A’s brass love that sort of thing, not that there’s anything wrong with that.  It is a good apporach to the plate, but too many times batting averages aren’t high enough.  Nobody here really sticks out, although, I love Kurt Suzuki behind the dish, he’s grown to be a fairly good hitter too.

Projected Bench:
C Landon Powell – S
3B/1B Eric Chavez – L
INF Adam Rosales – R
1B/3B/DH Jake Fox – R
Other Options:
OF Gabe Gross – L
2B/OF Eric Patterson – L
OF Travis Buck – L

With Chavez, Rosales, and Fox on the bench, it’s looking pretty good.  Chavez has proven what he can do, Rosales has annihilated the Minors, and Jake Fox could one day be starting somewhere (he has got big time power, for those who don’t know).

The Seattle Mariners

Projected Rotation:
Felix Hernandez – RHP
Cliff Lee – LHP
Ryan Rowland-Smith – LHP
Ian Snell – RHP
Doug Fister – RHP
Other Options:
Luke French – LHP

I’ve been talking ever since the trade went down that Seattle now has the best 1-2 punch in the MLB.  Cliff Lee made a fan for life out of me last year when he did what he did for me and my Phillies.  I tuned in with new-found excitement everytime he pitched and was wowed during Game 1 of the World Series when he dominated.  In addition, I was genuinely disappointed when I heard we traded him away.  It’s not all about Cliff though, King Felix was just that last year and I really like Ryan Rowland-Smith, these guys look rather good.

Projected Bullpen:
David Aardsma – Closer – RHP
Mark Lowe – RHP
Brandon League – RHP
Sean White – RHP
Garrett Olson – LHP
Shawn Kelley – RHP
Jason Vargas – LHP
Other Options:
Kanekoa Texeira* – RHP

*Rule 5 pick*

I wouldn’t say that the bullpen looks anywhere near as good as the rotation.  Picking up Brandon League, even if it meant trading away Brandon Morrow, will be worth it in the end.  He’s got quite the live arm and is a tough guy to face in the late innings when he’s healthy.  David Aardsma may have been the surprise of the season last year, as I don’t believe anyone saw that dominance coming.  Mark Lowe adds to League and Aardsma to give hitters three tough arms to face late in games.

Projected Starters:
C – Rob Johnson – R
1B – Casey Kotchman – L
2B – Jose Lopez – R
3B – Chone Figgins – S
SS – Jack Wilson – R
LF – Milton Bradley – S
CF – Franklin Gutierrez – R
RF – Ichiro Suzuki – L
DH – Ken Griffey Jr. – L

Adding former division rival Chone Figgans and giving Milton Bradley a change of scenery should do wonders for this already stable offensive team.  Not to mention, the defense on this team looks spectacular.  I suppose the only guy you really won’t know what to expect from is the new catcher Rob Johnson, he may not even win the job once Spring is over.

Projected Bench:
OF Michael Saunders – L
C Josh Bard – S
3B/1B Jack Hannahan – L
1B/DH Ryan Garko – R
Other Options:
LF/DH Eric Byrnes – R
C Adam Moore – R
OF Ryan Langerhans – L
INF Matt Tuiasosopo – R

This is a bench that has a lot of options, maybe some of these guys should be starting and maybe some of them should make the team.  Should Ryan Garko be the DH when there is a lefty on the mound?  Should Eric Byrnes get the veteran benefit of the doubt and take a spot from someone younger (and possibly more deserving)?  These questions should be answered during Spring.

The Texas Rangers

Projected Rotation:
Scott Feldman – RHP
Rich Harden – RHP
Tommy Hunter – RHP
Brandon McCarthy – RHP
Derek Holland – LHP
Other Options:
Colby Lewis – RHP
Neftali Feliz – RHP

What is with all this talk about Colby Lewis getting a spot in the rotation?  Whatever he did in Japan or whatever is fine and dandy, but he doesn’t earn the right the be given anything.  I put Tommy Hunter, Brandon McCarthy, and Derek Holland ahead of him on my depth chart.  Rich Harden is a fantastic signing, those of you who know my blog know all to well how I feel about him.  This guy has the nastiest stuff I have ever seen when he is healthy, Cy Young stuff.

Projected Bullpen:
Frank Francisco – Closer – RHP
C.J. Wilson – LHP
Neftali Feliz – RHP
Darren Oliver – LHP
Darren O’Day – RHP
Chris Ray – RHP
Doug Mathis – RHP

Since the Rangers decided to bring Neftali Feliz to the Majors last season as a relief pitcher, then that is where he should stay.  I’ve seen the Yankees run Joba Chamberlain into the ground because they can’t figure out where they want him, and frankly I don’t want to see the same thing happen to Feliz.  In addition to that, the Rangers need more help in the bullpen anyways.  With Feliz having a spot in the pen, it looks to be a pretty good one.

Projected Starters:
C – Jarrod Saltalamacchia – S
1B – Chris Davis – L
2B – Ian Kinsler – R
3B – Michael Young – R
SS – Elvis Andrus – R
LF – Josh Hamilton – L
CF – Julio Borbon – L
RF – Nelson Cruz – R
DH – Vladimir Guerrero – R

It should come as no surprise to anyone that this Rangers offense looks to be awfully strong, even without Rudy Jaramillo as hitting coach.  It’s good to hear that Jarrod Saltalamacchia is feeling good, so he should do just fine behind the plate.  Josh Hamilton is going to need to be healthy this year, he’s exciting to watch and he really changes a game.  A guy who I really like is Nelson Cruz.  I first heard about Nellie in 2008 when I heard he was smashing the ball in the Minors.  Well, Nellie brought his power to the Majors and if anyone hasn’t seen him yet, by all means, watch him this year.

Projected Bench:
OF David Murphy – L
C – Talyor Teagarden – R
INF Joaquin Arias – R
INF Esteban German – R

I haven’t the slightest clue what is going on in the head of Khalil Greene, but I hope he gets everything sorted out up there.  I remember watching him when he first came up and being really impressed with his defense, good luck KhalilDavid Murphy is a guy who, by all rights, should be a starter.  Well, he would be a starter on most other clubs, but this particular team has a stacked outfield, he’ll be just fine on the bench though.

Duel of the Day – Monday, August 31, 2009

Joe Blanton pitched a great game, left with the lead, Madson came in, and I thought they were going to lose the lead, a great play gets 2 outs and then they get out of the innings.  Brad Lidge was perfect for his second outing in a row, I just hope this is a good sign, if there was ever a time for him to get hot, it’s right now.

Pitchers who went 7 innings: Jeff Niemann (ND, 5 hits, 2 runs, 0 walks, 3 K’s), Clayton Kershaw (ND, 4 hits, 2 runs, 2 walks, 11 K’s), Bronson Arroyo (ND, 7.1 innings, 6 hits, 2 runs, 2 walks, 3 K’s), Brian Matusz (W, 4 hits, 1 run, 1 walk, 8 K’s), Scott Baker (ND, 6 hits, 3 runs, 1 walk, 6 K’s), Nelson Figueroa (W, 6 hits, 1 run, 2 walks, 10 K’s), Dan Haren (W, 6 hits, 3 runs, 2 walks, 7 K’s), Jair Jurrjens (L, 7 hits, 3 runs – 2 earned, 2 walks, 2 K’s), Joe Blanton (W, 3 hits, 1 run, 4 walks, 7 K’s)

Pitchers who went 8 innings: Justin Verlander (W, 6 hits, 3 runs, 3 walks, 4 K’s), John Lackey (W, 5 hits, 1 run – 0 earned, 2 walks, 6 K’s), Ryan Rowland-Smith (L, 5 hits, 3 runs, 1 walk, 7 K”s)

Pitchers who went 9 innings: Zack Greinke (W, 1 hit, 0 runs, 1 walk, 5 K’s)

The Duel of Yesterday: Zack Greinke v. Ryan Rowland-Smith

New York Yankees (Andy Pettitte, 11-6, 4.18) at Baltimore Orioles (Jeremy Guthrie, 9-12, 5.26)

Atlanta Braves (Kenshin Kawakami, 6-10, 4.08) at Florida Marlins (Josh Johnson, 13-3, 3.04)

Pittsburgh Pirates (Paul Maholm, 7-7, 4.59) at Cincinnati Reds (Johnny Cueto, 8-10, 4.61)

Toronto Blue Jays (Brett Cecil, 5-3, 4.96) at Texas Rangers (Derek Holland, 7-8, 4.95)

Los Angeles Angels (Joe Saunders, 10-7, 5.27) at Seattle Mariners (Luke French, 4-3, 3.92)

Arizona Diamondbacks (Doug Davis, 7-11, 3.75) at Los Angeles Dodgers (Randy Wolf, 9-6, 3.25)

The rundown:

A couple of crafty, left-handed veterans face off in Chavez Ravine tonight.  Doug Davis really is having a very good season, although his record doesn’t show it, and Randy Wolf has been incredible, he hasn’t finished a season with an ERA this low since 2002 with the Phillies.  Doug Davis left his last start with the lead, Chad Qualls was brought in to get out of the 8th inning jam, instead he allowed a 3 run homer, and Davis sat there with another no decision, he really pitched a great game too.  Against the Dodgers this season, he is 0-1 in 2 starts with a 5.35 ERA.  Randy Wolf has won 4 games in a row and pitched a great one against Colorado last time out, going 7.1 innings and allowing just a run.  Against the D’backs, he is 2-0 in 3 games with a 4.01 ERA.

The notables: Not really too much, just Josh Johnson and one of my favorites Rich Harden.

Duel of the Day – Wednesday, August 26, 2009

It’s time for Brad Lidge to be the bigger man, it’s time for him to go up to Charlie Manuel and tell him “Take me out of the closer’s role, it’s just not working.”  I thought it was amusing how he said this: “The fourth day in a row for me historically has been pretty bad.”  Brad, I don’t care what day it is, you have been bad since the season began, I wish I could trust him, but I just can’t anymore.

Pitchers who went 7 innings: Mat Latos (ND, 2 hits, 0 runs, 0 walks, 4 K’s), Jair Jurrjens (ND, 7.2 innings, 5 hits, 1 run, 4 walks, 7 K’s), Bronson Arroyo (ND, 6 hits, 1 run, 1 walk, 4 K’s), Wandy Rodriguez (L, 3 hits, 1 run, 1 walk, 6 K’s), Jason Hammel (ND, 8 hits, 2 runs, 2 walks, 4 K’s), Brett Anderson (ND, 6 hits, 1 run, 1 walk, 8 K’s), Dan Haren (ND, 6 hits, 2 runs, 1 walk, 6 K’s), Matt Cain (ND, 4 hits, 2 runs – 1 earned, 4 walks, 4 K’s)

Pitchers who went 8 innings: Zack Greinke (W, 5 hits, 2 runs, 1 walk, 15 K’s), Adam Wainwright (W, 3 hits, 0 runs, 0 walks, 5 K’s)

Chicago White Sox (Gavin Floyd, 10-8, 3.98) at Boston Red Sox (Tim Wakefield, 11-3, 4.31)

The notables: Josh Johnson, who looks to rebound after a rare bad outing.  Tim Wakefield, who looks to pick up where he left off, as he returns tonight.  Rich Harden, who has showed me that the old Rich isn’t dead yet.  Joel Pineiro, who is still having a very nice season.  Randy Wolf, who has has plenty of goos games in a row.

Duel of the Day – Sunday, August 16, 2009

The Phillies are having open tryout’s for potential closers, any fan can come to the ballpark on the scheduled day and show them what he’s got.  In all seriousness, I really think we should give Chan Ho Park a try, or Tyler Walker even, find a game where you have a 3 run lead and if Park hasn’t been used or Walker hasn’t been moved then try it out, what have they got to lose anymore, except more games via blown save.  Park has a 2.57 ERA as a reliever, striking out 47 in 42 innings with a 1.12 WHIP.  Tyler Walker’s ERA is 2.41, with a 1.07 WHIP, but I would consider him only if Park fails.

Pitchers who went 7 innings: Zach Duke (L, 7.1 innings, 9 hits, 3 runs, 1 walk, 3 K’s), Gavin Floyd (W, 8 hits, 1 run, 2 walks, 8 K’s), Matt Cain (ND, 7.1 innings, 6 hits, 3 runs, 0 walks, 2 K’s), John Lackey (W, 7 hits, 1 run, 1 walk, 6 K’s), Mike Burns (W, 4 hits, 2 runs, 3 walks, 7 K’s)

The Duel of Yesterday: Matt Cain v. Johan Santana

The matchups:

Kansas City Royals (Kyle Davies, 4-8, 6.11) at Detroit Tigers (Armando Galarraga, 6-10, 5.23)

San Francisco Giants (Jonathan Sanchez, 5-10, 4.61) at New York Mets (Mike Pelfrey, 8-8, 4.88)

Washington Nationals (John Lannan, 8-9, 3.58) at Cincinnati Reds (Justin Lehr, 2-0, 1.80)

Los Angeles Angels (Sean O’Sullivan, 3-1, 5.12) at Baltimore Orioles (Jeremy Guthrie, 7-12, 5.43)

Colorado Rockies (Aaron Cook, 10-4, 3.93) at Florida Marlins (Chris Volstad, 8-9, 4.71)

Colorado Rockies (Jorge De La Rosa, 10-8, 4.78) at Florida Marlins (Rick VandenHurk, 2-1, 4.15)

Toronto Blue Jays (Marc Rzepczynski, 1-4, 4.38) at Tampa Bay Rays (Matt Garza, 7-8, 3.80)

Boston Red Sox (Junichi Tazawa, 1-1, 4.05) at Texas Rangers (Dustin Nippert, 3-1, 3.62)

Houston Astros (Roy Oswalt, 6-4, 3.87) at Milwaukee Brewers (Braden Looper, 10-6, 4.99)

Cleveland Indians (Aaron Laffey, 6-3, 3.25) at Minnesota Twins (Nick Blackburn, 8-7, 3.99)

San Diego Padres (Clayton Richard, 6-3, 4.57 – 2-0, 4.15) at St. Louis Cardinals (Kyle Lohse, 5-7, 4.34)

Pittsburgh Pirates (Ross Ohlendorf, 10-8, 4.30) at Chicago Cubs (Rich Harden, 7-7, 4.30)

Chicago White Sox (John Danks, 10-8, 4.04) at Oakland Athletics (Trevor Cahill, 6-12, 5.06)

New York Yankees (Joba Chamberlain, 8-2, 3.85) at Seattle Mariners (Doug Fister, 0-0, 0.00)

Los Angeles Dodgers (Randy Wolf, 6-6, 3.43) at Arizona Diamondbacks (Yusmeiro Petit, 2-6, 5.87)

Philadelphja Phillies (J.A. Happ, 8-2, 2.75) at Atlanta Braves (Javier Vazquez, 10-7, 2.90)

The rundown:

The only duel potential today is this one between Happ and Vazquez.  Vazquez has again shown that he is one of the premier strikout pitchers in the league and he’ll be at 200 by season’s end for the 5th time.  Also, that ERA of his is tremendous and his WHIP is 1.04, which is outstandind.  I believe it was Hawk Harrelson who dubbed him “The Silent Assassin,” not sure how he gave him this name, but I would assume it’s because he puts together great seasons year after year and he’s always forgotten.  J.A. Happ is putting together a sensational year and I love watching him pitch.  He may walk guys and give up homers, but he is doing great and he’s really been the story of the year, especially lately.  If the Phillies decide to lead this game, I suggest it’s by more than 3 runs, the last thing we need is more Brad Lidge.

The notables:

Notable pitchers include: Jorge De La Rosa who struck out 11 last time, Matt Garza who had 3 good starts until a poor outing last time, Aaron Laffey who has given up 4 runs in his last 25.2 innings, Rich Harden has been racking up the K’s and is getting better and better, Randy Wolf pitched 8 strong innings last time out in what has been a very good season for him.

Duel of the Day – Tuesday, August 11, 2009

Pitchers who went 7 innings: Jorge De La Rosa (W, 7.2 innings, 7 hits, 1 run, 4 walks, 11 K’s), Doug Davis (W, 4 hits, 2 runs, 3 walks, 2 K’s)

The Duel of Yesterday: There was none, what a terrible day for pitching.

The matchups:

Washington Nationals (John Lannan, 8-8, 3.39) at Atlanta Braves (Tommy Hanson, 6-2, 3.22)

Oakland Athletics (Trevor Cahill, 6-11, 5.13) at Baltimore Orioles (David Hernandez, 3-4, 3.96)

Texas Rangers (Dustin Nippert, 3-0, 2.73) at Cleveland Indians (Aaron Laffey, 5-3, 3.58)

Toronto Blue Jays (Scott Richmond, 6-6, 3.97) at New York Yankees (Joba Chamberlain, 8-2, 3.73)

Houston Astros (Roy Oswalt, 6-4, 3.61) at Florida Marlins (Chris Volstad, 8-9, 4.48)

Detroit Tigers (Rick Porcello, 10-7, 4.30) at Boston Red Sox (Junichi Tazawa, 0-1, 10.80)

Philadelphia Phillies (J.A. Happ, 8-2, 2.74) at Chicago Cubs (Rich Harden, 7-7, 4.41)

San Diego Padres (Clayton Richard, 5-3, 4.49) at Milwaukee Brewers (Braden Looper, 10-5, 4.84)

Kansas City Royals (Kyle Davies, 3-8, 6.37) at Minnesota Twins (Nick Blackburn, 8-6, 3.97)

Cincinnati Reds (Justin Lehr, 1-0, 1.93) at St. Louis Cardinals (Mitchell Boggs, 1-0, 3.29)

Pittsburgh Pirates (Ross Ohlendorf, 9-8, 4.29) at Colorado Rockies (Jhoulys Chacin, 0-0, 1.80)

New York Mets (Livan Hernandez, 7-6, 5.08) at Arizona Diamondbacks (Max Scherzer, 6-6, 4.01)

Tampa Bay Rays (David Price, 5-4, 4.91) at Los Angeles Angels (Ervin Santana, 4-6, 7.20)

Chicago White Sox (John Danks, 9-8, 4.23) at Seattle Mariners (Doug Fister, 0-0, 0.00)

Los Angeles Dodgers (Randy Wolf, 5-6, 3.55) at San Francisco Giants (Joe Martinez, 2-0, 5.87)

The rundown:

A NL East showdown between the surging Nationals and the Braves.  John Lannan has been the Nationals best pitcher, to nobody’s surprise.  A good left-hander who doesn’t utilize the strikeout all that much, but he gets guys out and has no trouble going 7 innings or more.  In his last start, he went 6 against the Marlins allowing 2 runs, he got the win.  His last start against the Braves was phenominal, 8 innings, 9 hits, and 3 runs, he picked up the win.  He is 1-1 with 1 no decision against the Braves this year.  Tommy Hanson has been great in his rookie year for the Braves.  He won his last start, beating the Padres in 6 innings, allowing 2 runs and getting 5 K’s.  His last start against the Nationals he pitched great, but got a no decision after 7 innings on 1 run ball.

This is one i’m definetly excited for, my man J.A. Happ against one of my favorite pitchers, Rich Harden.  Happ is rightly being kept in the rotation and I can’t wait to see all he can do this season and for many to come.  His last start was breathtaking, a complete game shutout of the Rockies when he had all this Pedro controversy around him, it was an October-like atmosphere by the time the 9th inning began, maybe the best game i’ve seen all year.  Happ has never faced the Cubs, whether in the bullpen or rotation.  Rich Harden has had a sad season in my opinion, he is better than that ERA, still, he has 124 K’s in 104 innings.  His last start was a loss against Cincinnati, he went 6, allowed 2 earned runs, and struck out 9.  Last time against the Phillies he was great, but got a no decision.  He went 7, gave up 4 hits, 1 run, and struck out 6.

The notables:

Joba Chamberlain didn’t pitch that well last time out, but he won, and he’s won his last 4 starts, he’ll face the Blue Jays.  Before leaving last game with an injury, Roy Oswalt on a good roll in his last 7 starts, he faces the Marlins.

The winner:

J.A. Happ v. Rich Harden, I cannot wait.

Duel of the Day – Wednesday, August 5, 2009

Pitchers who went 7 innings: Josh Johnson (ND, 6 hits, 4 runs, 0 walks, 9 K’s), Scott Baker (W, 3 hits, 0 runs, 1 walk, 4 K’s), Matt Garza (ND, 3 hits, 2 runs, 2 walks, 6 K’s), Tom Gorzelanny (W, 3 hits, 1 run, 1 walk, 6 K’s), Jonathan Sanchez (W, 4 hits, 0 runs, 3 walks, 8 K’s), Javier Vazquez (W, 4 hits, 2 runs, 2 walks, 6 K’s)

Pitchers who went 8 innings: Yusmeiro Petit (W, 1 hit, 0 runs, 3 walks, 4 K’s), Johan Santana (ND, 9 hits, 5 runs, 0 walks, 6 K’s), John Lackey (ND, 5 hits, 4 runs – 3 earned, 2 walks, 7 K’s)

Pitchers who went 9 innings: Roy Halladay (L, 10 hits, 5 runs – 4 earned, 0 walks, 5 K’s)

The Duel of Yesterday: Jon Lester v. Matt Garza

The matchups:

St. Louis Cardinals (Kyle Lohse, 4-6, 4.14) at New York Mets (Jon Niese, 1-1, 4.50)

Milwaukee Brewers (Braden Looper, 9-5, 5.03) at Los Angeles Dodgers (Jason Schmidt, 2-1, 4.50)

The rundown:

Well, nothing looks all that good actually, the best I saw was Jorge De La Rosa v. J.A. Happ, De La Rosa has incredible ability, he can strikeout guys with the best of them, his control is spotty at times though.  J.A. Happ has been great, his last two decisions have been losses, but no matter.  I heard that Happ might be the odd man out to make room for Pedro Martinez, and I was absolutly infuriated.  J.A. Happ has proved to this team that he should have been the starter out of Spring Training, and when he got the job, he ran with it, and now they want to stop all this, for Pedro freakin’ Martinez.  The second we got Cliff Lee was the second Pedro should have kissed his contract goodbye, if they put Pedro in and knock Happ out, they I will be ranting much more.

The notables:

Young stud Tommy Hanson takes on the San Diego Padres, Edwin Jackson will look to continue his miracle season against the Orioles, John Lannan has again been the best pitcher for the Nationals, he’ll face the Marlins, and Rich Harden looks to impress me against the Reds.

Duel of the Day – Tuesday, July 21, 2009

Nothing too special yesterday, from the pitching standpoint at least.  Andy Pettitte pitched 7.1 innings, giving up 6 hits, 1 run, 2 walks, and had 8 strikeouts.  Livan Hernandez went 7 innings against the Nationals, allowing 2 runs on 5 hits and 2 walks.  A guy who I think still has great potential, Jorge De La Rosa, threw 7 innings, giving up a run on 4 hits and a walk, he struck out 6.

The matchups:

Los Angeles Angels (Ervin Santana, 2-5, 6.70) at Kansas City Royals (Sidney Ponson, 1-5, 7.27)

Los Angeles Angels (Sean O’Sullivan, 2-0, 3.80) at Kansas City Royals (Bruce Chen, 0-4, 6.86)

San Francisco Giants (Ryan Sadowski, 2-1, 1.00) at Atlanta Braves (Derek Lowe, 8-7, 4.40)

Chicago Cubs (Rich Harden, 6-6, 5.06) at Philadelphia Phillies (Joe Blanton, 6-4, 4.44)

Baltimore Orioles (Rich Hill, 3-2, 7.22) at New York Yankees (Sergio Mitre – First Start)

Milwaukee Brewers (Braden Looper, 8-4, 4.95) at Pittsburgh Pirates (Virgil Vasquez, 1-3, 6.52)

Seattle Mariners (Garret Olson, 3-3, 4.53) at Detroit Tigers (Rick Porcello, 8-6, 4.14)

New York Mets (Oliver Perez, 2-2, 7.99) at Washington Nationals (John Lannan, 6-7, 3.64)

Cleveland Indians (Cliff Lee, 5-9, 3.31) at Toronto Blue Jays (Brett Cecil, 3-1, 5.40)

St. Louis Cardinals (Todd Wellemeyer, 7-7, 5.56) at Houston Astros (Wandy Rodriguez, 9-6, 2.81)

Boston Red Sox (Josh Beckett, 11-3, 3.35) at Texas Rangers (Tommy Hunter, 1-1, 2.35)

Tampa Bay Rays (Jeff Niemann, 8-4, 3.73) at Chicago White Sox (Clayton Richard, 3-3, 5.42)

Arizona Diamondbacks (Max Scherzer, 5-6, 3.46) at Colorado Rockies (Aaron Cook, 9-3, 3.85)

Florida Marlins (Chirs Volstad, 6-9, 4.53) at San Diego Padres (Chad Gaudin, 4-8, 4.84)

Minnesota Twins (Anthony Swarzak, 2-3, 4.50) at Oakland Athletics (Dallas Braden, 7-8, 3.45)

Cincinnati Reds (Homer Bailey, 1-1, 6.43) at Los Angeles Dodgers (Randy Wolf, 4-4, 3.51)

The rundown:

Josh Beckett is one of the premier pitchers in the MLB, although he doesn’t get the same attention as he did say 2 seasons ago.  Look at his numbers though, 11 wins, 3 losses, and an ERA of 3.35, yea pretty good, and i’m not even going in depth.  His opponent, Tommy Hunter has only made 4 starts this year, in his last one he went 6 innings and didn’t allow a run, he has a tough task ahead of him tonight, but so does Beckett.  This Rangers offense is powerful, but then again you already knew that.

Max Scherzer is a great young pitcher.  I’ve seen him a few times this season and his control can get a little all over the place but when he’s going that fastball will blow past you, the slider will spin you around, and you’ll be so far ahead of that changeup.  This kid is learning to pitch, I don’t think he’ll be just a thrower, he’ll pitch, but still throw hard.  Aaron Cook is a bit of a different pitcher, but he’s having a really good season with 9 wins and an ERA under 4.  Never been a big fan of his, but you can’t argue with some good nimbers.

The notables:

Some good pitchers today, just not many matchups.  You guys already know me, the biggest Rich Harden fan, and he’s going tonight against my Phils Joe Blanton, i’m going to have to go against Harden on this one.  Cliff Lee faces the Blue Jays and Wandy Rodriguez faces the Cardinals.  Promising young Jeff Niemann, who i’ve really started to like, is on the mound tonight in Chicago.  Two other young pitchers are also going tonight, Chris Volstad and Homer Bailey.  Dallas Braden will face the Twins and look to get to .500.

The winner:

I’ll say Beckett/Hunter wins this one, their game means more than a Diamondbacks/Rockies game.  Lets see if Beckett can shut down that explosive Ranger offense.  Enjoy the pitching!

Duel of the Day – Thursday, July 16, 2009

Oh i’m so happy real baseball is back.  Yesterday was gruesome, I never realized how much I rely on baseball until yesterday when I was dying for some.  I actually found myself watching pieces of the AAA All-Star Game.  Today though we have a limited schedule and hopefully there’s a pitchers duel in there somewhere.

The matchups:

New York Mets (Oliver Perez, 2-2, 8.78) at Atlanta Braves (Derek Lowe, 8-7, 4.39)

Seattle Mariners (Garret Olson, 3-2, 4.42) at Cleveland Indians (Cliff Lee, 4-9, 3.47)

Chicago Cubs (Rich Harden, 5-6, 5.47) at Washington Nationals (John Lannan, 6-6, 3.70)

Milwaukee Brewers (Braden Looper, 7-4, 4.94) at Cincinnati Reds (Homer Bailey, 1-0, 5.16)

Philadelphia Phillies (Jamie Moyer, 8-6, 5.99) at Florida Marlins (Chris Volstad, 6-8, 4.44)

Los Angeles Angels (Ervin Santana, 1-5, 7.81) at Oakland Athletics (Dallas Braden, 7-7, 3.12)

Colorado Rockies (Aaron Cook, 8-3, 3.98) at San Diego Padres (Chad Gaudin, 4-7, 5.03)

Houston Astros (Wandy Rodriguez, 8-6, 2.96) at Los Angeles Dodgers (Randy Wolf, 4-3, 3.45)

The pitchers:

You’ll see that i’ve highlighted none of them this time around.  Well, none of them look particularly stiking.  So I suppose i’ll just give mention the the pitchers.  Cliff Lee is having another pretty good year, you just have to look past his record to see it.  Ah there he is again, Rich Harden taking the mound once more and he’ll be sure to leave me praying for a beauty.  Homer Bailey had an incredible start in Philly his last time out and I really hope he can keep it up, i’ve always thought he could be better than he has been.  Chris Volstad’s season hasn’t been anything special, but I think this kid has a bunch of talent, I hope he doesn’t show it off today however, as Moyer needs all the help he can get.  Today i’ve left it up to you to pick the matchup, i’ll be watching my Phillies, but i’m sure i’ll be keeping an eye on the Harden game.  Enjoy the pitching!

Duel of the Day – Friday, July 10, 2009

Well yesterdays pick panned out pretty well.  It was a shame that Halladay had to lose that ballgame, the 5th inning did him in, but it would have been nice if he got some run support.  David Price on the other hand was really good, he gave them 6 solid innings giving up only 1 run and only 1 walk, which may be the bigger story.

The matchups:

St. Louis Cardinals (Chris Carpenter, 6-3, 2.32) at Chicago Cubs (Rich Harden, 5-5, 5.35)

Cleveland Indians (Cliff Lee, 4-8, 3.45) at Detroit Tigers (Edwin Jackson, 6-4, 2.59)

Toronto Blue Jays (Brett Cecil, 2-1, 6.23) at Baltimore Orioles (Jason Berken, 1-5, 6.25)

Pittsburgh Pirates (Zach Duke, 8-7, 3.28) at Philadelphia Phillies (Joe Blanton, 5-4, 4.69)

Kansas City Royals (Brian Bannister, 6-6, 3.87) at Boston Red Sox (Jon Lester, 7-6, 4.16)

Cincinnati Reds (Bronson Arroyo, 8-8, 5.85) at New York Mets (Fernando Nieve, 3-2, 2.73)

Oakland Athletics (Vin Mazzaro, 2-4, 3.59) at Tampa Bay Rays (Jeff Niemann, 7-4, 4.14)

Los Angeles Dodgers (Chad Billingsley, 9-4, 3.14) at Milwaukee Brewers (Braden Looper, 7-4, 4.78)

Washington Nationals (Scott Olsen, 2-4, 6.04) at Houston Astros (Roy Oswalt, 5-4. 3.81)

Chicago White Sox (John Danks, 7-6, 3.76) at Minnesota Twins (Nick Blackburn, 7-4, 2.94)

Atlanta Braves (Derek Lowe, 7-7, 4.56) at Colorado Rockies (Ubaldo Jimenez, 6-8, 3.86)

Florida Marlins (Ricky Nolasco, 6-6, 5.42) at Arizona Diamondbacks (Danny Haren, 8-5, 2.16)

New York Yankees (Joba Chamberlain, 4-2, 4.04) at Los Angeles Angels (Joe Saunders, 8-5, 4.44)

Texas Rangers (Scott Feldman, 7-2, 3.91) at Seattle Mariners (Brandon Morrow, 0-3, 5.05)

San Diego Padres (Josh Banks, 1-0, 5.60) at San Francisco Giants (Jonathan Sanchez, 2-8, 5.30)

I have always been a huge fan of Rich Harden, when he is on I truly belive he can dominate any hitter in baseball.  Sadly, Harden hasn’t been on as of late, especially in his last start, but he’s still one of those guys to watch because of the potential he has to pitch an amazing game.  Oh yeah, and that guy he’s facing, well that would be Chris Carpenter, who has been outstanding this year.  This matchup combines great pitchers and a great rivalry.  Plus, it’s the only game on during the day, why not check this one out?

Both Cliff Lee and Edwin Jackson have had very good years, Jackson especially.  I havn’t watched Jackson all that much, mainly because I remember the uninteresting thrower that he was.  Not sure if he’s still that same guy, but if so, it’s working rather well, his ERA is phenominal.  Cliff Lee has quietly had a very good season and he still is able to pitch a tremendous ballgame.  I look for this one to be pretty good.

Another AL Central matchup, John Danks and Nick Blackburn.  Blackburn is putting up really good numbers again, but doesn’t get enough recognition.  Johnny Danks is doing pretty well for himself as well.  Not sure how good of a duel this will be, but I think it deserves to be watched.  I’ll end up checking back and forth between this game and the aformentioned (I love you MLB Extra Innings).

The winner for your Friday will definetly be Capenter v. Harden.  Both these guys can go out on any given day and give you an unbelievable performance.  I really hope that Rich Harden can pull out one of his old-fashioned starts; you know, 6-7 innings with like 9 strikeouts.  Those games were fun to watch and this one will be too.  One thing thats for sure is that Carpenter is going to be pitching one helluva ballgame.  Enjoy the pitching!
